NYT Summary

Introduction

This assignment allowed me to grow as a reader and a writer, as I was able to develop a few points from the course learning outcomes. Specifically, it helped me “acknowledge…linguistic differences,” as I do not write like a scientist or journalist yet, but I had to view and analyze the writing styles for both fields. This gives me a better idea of how to write in various styles and fields. This also connects to “genre analysis is…to explore effective writing across disciplinary contexts and beyond.” I looked at different genres of writing and saw what successful others effectively did for their own purpose. I also had to “practice using…online databases and the Internet to locate sources” that were appropriate as well as strengthened my “source use practices,” as I had to find the journal and NYT science article and analyze, cite, evaluate, and summarize.

At the beginning of both assignments, I had trouble starting the writing process. My article was quite short, so it was hard to write an analysis longer than the article itself. Also, I was not quite sure what to say about the journal, because at first it seemed very standard. However, as I kept going, I realized all the tiny nuances in the pieces, and it opened my eyes to all the different techniques the authors were careful to use,
